WHY STUDY A CAREER IN PUBLIC SERVICE (Health Science)?

 

Everyone needs health care. From newborns to seniors, Texans
require professionals who are experts at diagnosing and treating disease, using medical technologies and providing preventive care. There are hundreds of specialties available in the Health Science career pathway, including technicians, skilled support personnel, dentists and scientists. If you feel a calling to care for others or want to pursue a profession on the cutting edge of technology, Health Science may be the right career pathway for you under the Public Service Endorsement.

 

 

 

 

   
  • 9702 Principles of Health Science
    TSDS PEIMS Code: 13020200(PRINHLSC) 
    Grade Placement: 9–10 Credit: 1
    Prerequisite: None.
    The Principles of Health Science course is designed to provide an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the health care industry.

    9701 Medical Terminology
    TSDS PEIMS Code: 13020300(MEDTERM)
    Grade Placement: 9–12
    Credit: 1 Prerequisite: None.
    The Medical Terminology course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, singular and plural forms, and medical abbreviations. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.

    9706 Health Science Theory (HLTHSCI)(13020400)                                        Credit: 1                                                                                                                Grade placement: 10 - 12                                                                        Prerequisite: Biology; Principles of Health Science                                                    The Health Science Theory course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers.  Students employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development.

    3020 Anatomy and Physiology

    Grade Placement: 10–12
    Credit: 1
    Prerequisite: Biology and a second science credit.
    Recommended Prerequisite: A course from the Health and Science Career Cluster. The Anatomy and Physiology course is designed for students to conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students in Anatomy and Physiology will study a variety of topics, including the structure and body and the interaction of body systems for maintaining homeostasis. The course is available via the TLC and TxVSN or dual credit.  Course is paired with Scientific Reasearch for lab.

    9703 Pathophysiology

    Grade Placement: 11–12
    Credit: 1
    Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry. 
    Recommended Prerequisite: A course from the Health and Science Career Cluster. The Pathophysiology course is designed for students to conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students in Pathophysiology will study disease processes and how humans are affected. Emphasis is placed on prevention and treatment of disease. Students will differentiate between
    normal and abnormal physiology.
    Note: This course is taught through the TLC via the TxVSN.

    9707 Practicum in Health Science/Extended Practicum in Health Science(13020505)(EXPRHLS1); (13020515) (EXPRHLS2)                                         Credit: 2-3                                                                                                              Grade: 11-12                                                                                            Prerequisites: Health Science Theory; Biology     The Practicum in Health Science course is designed to give students practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills.  Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience.  Student may pursue a Practicum to earn a certification in:

    Certified Nurse Assistant/Aide, Phlebotomy Tech, Pharmacy Tech, Certified Medical Assistant      Note:  The course is taught dual credit.

    Note: This course satisfies a science credit requirement for students on the Foundation High School Program.

This endorsement may be earned through:

  • A coherent sequence of courses for 4 or more credits in CTE that consists of at least two courses in the same career cluster including at least 1 advanced CTE course (any course that is the third or higher course in a sequence); the final course in the sequence must be selected from:
    • Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources
    • Agriculture Construction
    • Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communications
    • Business Management and Administration
    • Finance
    • Hospitality and Tourism
    • Information Technology
    • Manufacturing
    • Marketing
    • Transportation, Distribution and Logistics
  • 4 English credits to include three levels in one of the following:
    • public speaking
    • debate
    • advanced broadcast journalism
    • advanced journalism (newspaper)
    • advanced journalism (yearbook)
  • 4 technology applications credits selected from:
    • Digital Design and Media Production
    • Digital Art and Animation
    • 3-D Modeling and Animation
    • Digital Communication in the 21st Century
    • Digital Video and Audio Design
    • Web Communications
    • Web Design
    • Web Game Development 
    • Independent Study in Evolving/Emerging Technologies
  • A coherent sequence of 4 credits from any of the above
